Cua Van Fishing Village in Cat Ba Island

The fishing community at Cat Ba town has been fast-growing because of the traditonal fishing activities and simple lifestyle that attract many domestic tourists and backpackers during the past decade. The most famous fishing villages with tourists are Ba Hang, Cua Van, Vong Vieng and Cap La that were recognized in the World Heritage site with a total of 287 households. Cua Van, the largest village with the population of 733 in 176 households, is now an attractive places in Cat Ba island due to ít unique charm.

Location

Cua Van (or Van Gia) Fishing Village is situated at Hung Thang Commune, Halong City, which is 20km away from the main wharf, the fishing village lies in a calm bay surrounded by mountain. They mainly earn their livelihood by fishing. Floating among the beautiful bay, the village is one of the most attractive attractions in Halong Bay thanks to its charming natural scenery and the quaint, interesting life style of its inhabitants.

This makes it ideal for anchoring boats here. Their floating houses look spacious and clean. The well-off families even have tiled roof houses with radios, television sets, tables and chairs, etc.

Visiting the village, tourists have a chance to experience the villagers’ daily life as well as the traditional culture and customs of the fishermen, who live in the World Heritage Area of Halong Bay.

This makes it ideal for anchoring boats here. Their floating houses look spacious and clean. The well-off families even have tiled roof houses with radios, television sets, tables and chairs, etc.

The village boasts a training establishment for their children. Over an area of 150m2 lies four classrooms and one small room for teachers. They are the first floating classrooms in Hạ Long. At present, Cua Van has 7 classes, mainly in grade 1 and grade 2. The youngest pupil is 8, while the oldest one is 17.

It is interesting to see the rambunctious children going to “school”. Their bustling calling and their flopping rowing liven up the atmosphere of the quite bay. Looking at the small boats driven by tiny oars going to school, and the radiant faces of the children, one feels confident in a bright future for the fishing village.

Cua Van now has become a tourist attraction and has been present in the itinerary of almost all tourist agencies.

Cua Van Village has about 176 households and the villagers earn their livelihood by mainly by fishing. Children learn to swim before they can walk and are able to amaze visitors with ability to row their bamboo-basket watercraft on their own in an amazingly deftly way. Cua Van Village is the only village out of the floating ones in Halong Bay, has a floating clinic and primary school.

How to get there

To reach Cua Van Village, visitors can take a tour in Halong Bay or go from Beo whaft, Cat Ba which is on the way to visit Lan Ha Bay. The village now has kayak available to row around or visit nearby Dark Cave and Light Cave.
